Many workers have difficulty getting workers compensation benefits for foot injuries at work.  Employers try to pass off such injuries as minor and often push employees to seek private treatment rather than advance their rights under the Workers' Compensation Act.  Employers feel they can get away with this because the more minor foot injuries, such as a sprained ankle, often resolve with minimal treatment and only short-term disruption of an employee's work.  Also, if the work injury that triggers the problem is not witnessed, or results from a minor occurence such as a mere misstep, the employer may dispute that the problem ever arose at work.

But many work-related foot injuries can have a very slow recovery.  If your work requires you to be on your feet a great deal, or demands that you operate equipment or vehicles with foot controls, a foot injury that becomes chronic can effectively end a carreer.

Even relatively minor seeming foot injuries may fail to heal fully and may leave the worker with pain and limitations that may be incompatible with their career work.  Stress fractures in the bones of the feet, particularly the smallest bones in areas of poor blood supply, can refuse to properly or fully heal even with surgical intervention.  Metatarsalgia -- a general term refering to any of a constallation of problems resulting in pain in the forefoot, usually caused by and aggravated by high impact jobs (such as warehouse work where a worker is on their feet, on and off palletts or lifts, etc.), can require prolonged treatment and slow recovery that is easily disrupted by any premature return to work.  Because such conditions often progress gradually with work activity, it can be difficult to prove the work-related link -- particularly where the worker seeks medical treatment without first reporting the problem as work-related.

Remember that repetitive work activity can be the cause of a work injury even in the absence of specific trauma.  Remember too that when there is a specific trauma at work that aggravates a condition such as a stress fracture in the foot or metatarsalgia, that aggravation injury is properly compensable as a work injury.

Foot injuries at work may also lead to other related problems.  For example, if you are limping at work, you may be putting unusual strain on your low back and spine, such that spinal symptoms may follow even in the absence of any other work-related back injury.
